Archaeological Discovery Found Near Dempster Highway

An archaeological discovery has been found around Tombstone Territorial Park.

An elusive 1500-year-old arrowhead has been discovered along the Yukon's Dempster Highway.

Jennifer Macgillivray, who was hiking in Tombstone Regional Park with her son and two friends, discovered the old caribou antler arrowhead on an eight-day wilderness backpacking adventure.

After the rare find, she contacted the Yukon Government's heritage branch to report the discovery.

Christian Thomas, government special project archaeologist, said they've never seen a bone artifact like it in the region.

The Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nations and Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nations overlapping territories typically used the bow and arrow hunting technologies starting around 15,000 years ago. The arrowhead found was exceptionally preserved in ice when the discovery was made.

The branch will now investigate the site and potentially even find more archaeological sites close by.
