CIRNAC Minister Gary Anandasangaree visited the community to announce the signing of the Corrections and Community Services amendment to the TTC Administration of Justice Agreement Implementation Plan.
Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Minister Gary Anandasangaree was in Teslin this weekend to announce an amendment to the community’s justice plan.
On Saturday, Minister Anandasangaree was joined by Teslin Tlingit Council Naa Shaáde Háni Eric Morris, Yukon Member of Parliament Brendan Hanley, Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai, and Deputy Premier Jeanie McLean to announce the signing of the Corrections and Community Services Amendment to the Teslin Tlingit Council Administration of Justice Agreement Implementation Plan.
Naa Shaáde Háni Morris said that his First Nation has been working with the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon on the Administration of Justice Agreement since its Self-Government Agreement was signed in 1993.
The Agreement was finalized on February 21, 2011. Now, 14 years later, this amendment to the agreement gives Teslin Tlingit Council full jurisdiction and rights for the administration of justice.
Minister Anandasangaree says that the signing of the amendment is a big step for Indigenous peoples across Canada, and congratulated Teslin Tlingit Council for leading the way.
“For over 30 years, the Teslin Tlingit Council have trailblazed a path forward on the administration of justice for self-governing nations,” said Anandasangaree. This is a significant milestone not only for the community and the Yukon but for all of Canada – as we work together to increase access to justice for Indigenous peoples, strengthen communities and advance self-determination.”
“With the signing of this amendment, the First Nation will have the resources needed to implement a corrections and community services model that is rooted in their own culture, values and way of life.”
The implementation of the Justice Agreement responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 42nd Call to Action to recognize Indigenous justice systems.
