Dawson Regional Land Use Planning Commission announce final draft plan

The next step is developing a recommended plan.

The Dawson Regional Land Use Planning Commission released their final draft plan today. With that, the government of Yukon has temporarily withdrawn the remainder of high conservation value areas identified in the plan from mineral staking.

 

The draft plan known as “On the Land We Walk Together”, identifies 44.7 per cent of the planning area as high conservation value land, which includes Tombstone Park.

 

Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in Deputy Chief Simon Nagano says the draft is a major milestone.

 

“This day has been long coming and we’re happy to be finally here, but it’s only one step in planning for our region that Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in call home. The journey has benefited from the wisdom and leadership of the planning commission and planning staff. Mahsi cho to everyone who played a role in crafting this plan. It’s not easy to work to juggle the interest of a region as diverse as ours,” said Deputy Chief Simon Nagano.

 

Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, John Streicker spoke about the withdrawals at the announcement of the plan this afternoon.

 

“This was our commitment that we made from the beginning, that once we had the draft plan in hand, we would make those withdrawals, and I want to thank the commission for supporting us with a couple of weeks to try and get those things in place,” said Minister Streicker.  

 

The next step in the commission’s process is to develop a recommended plan. That is expected to be complete by 2022.
