Front Street heights

Large crowds, mostly in favour of the project were on hand to hear council discuss proposed height change amendments on Monday's council meeting.

A hot topic that drew quite the crowd has risen in City Hall, as a public consultation emerged with a 9 respondents in favour while 7 were against a zoning bylaw amendment for the proposed multi-use buildings slated to be built at 1181 and 1191 Front St.

The proposed building sits on the far side of the train tracks nearly adjacent to Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre and will be a 100 room hotel, along with residential and commercial properties, and will contain a parking garage; if the height changes are passed.

Samson Hartland describes the need to maintain the Official City Planning rules which restricts heights of buildings near the Yukon River Waterfront.  He spoke of the domino effects of height relaxation it could have for downtown and that developers city wide need certainty.

Councillor Woodcock was the first to speak in favour of the amendment and notes that this is the type of decision that was intended to honoured in the Declaration of Commitment signed this summer by the City and Ta'an Kwach'an Council and the Kwanlin Dun FN

Councilor Fendrick was absent while Councillor Curteanu was excused due to conflict, leaving 5 on council to vote.  The vote carried 3-2
