Northern Leaders Send Letters to Federal Party Leaders

With an election call expected in the next few weeks, Northern Premiers have sent letters to each of the national party leaders seeking their views on northern issues and calling for continued collaboration between all governments.

With an election call expected in the next few weeks, Northern Premiers have sent letters to each of the national party leaders seeking their views on northern issues and calling for continued collaboration between all governments.

The letters are signed by all three northern Premiers and draws attention to the importance and uniqueness of our territories as a critical part of Canada’s future as an Arctic and Northern Nation. The Northern Premiers are looking to strengthen relations with the federal government and ensure Northern concerns are recognized and addressed.

The five-page letter includes 11 questions that cover such topics as Northern Voices and needs, Canada’s position in the Arctic, Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, climate change, economic development, health, and food security.

Premier Sandy Silver welcomed the opportunity to work with the other Northern Premiers to bring a collective voice of northern issues to the federal table: 

The letter notes that Northerners are forward looking people, and are keen to understand the intention of any incoming federal government. The federal party leaders are asked to respond to the questions and allow the northern Premiers to post the answers on their websites.
