The manhunt for the two fugitive BC teens suspected in three deaths in northern British Columbia last week has been expanded to a nation-wide manhunt, though the focus of the search at this point in is the Gillam area of Northern Manitoba.
RCMP and other law enforcement agencies from different jurisdictions across the country are working together to apprehend Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky. The two teens are considered dangerous and should not be approached.
The vehicle the two young men were driving was found burnt-out near Gillam Manitoba. Police confirm that there have been two established and corroborated sightings of the suspects in the Gillam area. These sightings were prior to the discovery of the burnt-out vehicle. July 22 was the last confirmed sighting in the Gillam area.
The informational check-stop at the intersection of Highway 280 and highway 290, the road leading into Gillam, Manitoba continues to be in place and will be for the foreseeable future.
Over 80 tips have been received by RCMP in the last 48 hours and there have been no reported stolen vehicles that could be attributed to the suspects.
At this point in the investigation, RCMP believe the fugitives are still in the area of Gillam. RCMP are not revealing the location of the specific search area they are searching.
Police have confirmed that the search area is large, the bush is thick, the land is swampy, the bugs are bad and people with knowledge of the harsh northern Manitoba terrain warn that this is no place to be if you are unprepared for the unforgiving landscape.
