Despite the current shutdown in tourism, there's new growth at Sundog Retreat. The well-loved Yukon resort is moving forward with a plan to feed Yukon families.
Owner Andrew Finton is turning his passion for increased local food security into a large greenhouse and field crops this year. "We know that food costs will rise this summer, and we know that vulnerable families will need more access to healthy food. The Whitehorse Food Bank is keen to distribute vegetables at harvest time."
Access to government support is helping Sundog Retreat put together a great team of young workers and local growers during these challenging times. The pilot project credits neighbour Steve Mackenzie-Grieves at the Yukon Grain Farm for invaluable help in planting and irrigating some of the first crop.
"We're having to move quickly, and so many people have stepped up to offer expertise," Andrew says. "Sarah Ouellette, Roy Ness, several Ag Branch staff and lots of neighbours have been so supportive in helping shape our plan."
Yukoners are encouraged to help support the project through a crowd-sourcing campaign on Indiegogo.
