RCMP have confirmed that 50-year-old Martin Claude Pelletier of Tagish and 26-year-old Candace Shantel Gordon of Whitehorse were killed early on Sunday morning after boat they were in hit the Tagish River Bridge. The bridge separates the Six Mile River on one side and Marsh Lake on the other.
RCMP say they located the deceased individuals, as well as a 28-year-old man, following a conducted patrol by water and air near the accident scene.
RCMP say the injured man was taken via helicopter to Whitehorse General Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
RCMP say the boat, which was driven by Pelletier, sustained significant damage and was seized by Carcross RCMP as part of the investigation efforts. RCMP say visibility, conditions and impairment are believed to have been factors in this incident and that the investigation is ongoing.
According to a Six Mile River Resort spokesperson, law enforcement needs to step up and patrol the area as boat traffic and erratic driving along the river has increased steadily over the years.
